I’m still planning on the MK8 Golf R to be my next car, but that is a long way away, and I can’t keep off the car buying sites. If you had $40k for a DD with a relatively short commute, lets say 2010 or newer, what would you buy, and why? Simeone demo day photo for your time.

A CPO BMW 335i M-sport (xDrive?) or 435i M-sport would be nice. A M235i as well. A 328i xDrive wagon could be fun with a tune and some suspension bits.
A 2010 or 2011 Lexus IS-F would be awesome. It’s such a sweet car and reliable for what it is. Drive one at least. A newer CPO IS350 F-sport wouldn’t be a bad choice either. Some people actually prefer the current IS to the 3 series.
You could probably find a Corvette Stingray Z51 for around $40k that’s in good shape. Very different from a Golf R, but surprisingly practical.
You could get into a new Jaguar XE 35t Base for basically $40k. Worth a look perhaps.
You could get a CPO Audi S3 if you don’t need the hatch. Might hold value even better than a Golf R.
There are a bunch of others good and bad suggestions like the B8 S4/S5, Mustang, Camaro, WRX, Cayman & Boxter, Cayenne (haha why not?), Mini John Cooper Works (if your spine is iron), Acura TLX SH-AWD (yeah), BMW M5 V10 (lol), and so on.
If you buying new 2017 Golf R would be fantastic if you’re in traffic due to the now standard (I believe) adaptive cruise control. I have ACC on my Audi and it is fantastic in stop-and-go traffic (that part only works with auto gearboxes, obviously). Adaptive cruise is great for commuting.

How long’s a relatively short commute, and do you have any other cars?

Lotus Evora. There’s a couple out there sub-40k.
Your commute just got longer.

You’re best bet? C5 Corvette Z06. Under $20k for the best examples, 30+ mpg highway, more fun than you will ever have in a Golf, or almost any other car.

For a DD, I’d go E63. Lots of power, lots of comfort.
If I could find one, I’d be tempted to go 997.2, but that would be stretch, and not likely 2010. Also, E63 is faster. At least in a straight line.

But for $52,000 this one is almost perfect as it’s from Carmax and is therefore eligible for the Maxcare warranty, which WILL pay for itself in a year or two tops, and it only has 21,000 miles on the clock. http://m.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=438105848&endYear=2013&pageLayout=list&sortBy=bestmatcha&startYear=2010&mmt=%5BMB%5BS600%5B%5D%5D%5B%5D%5D
